When James first began lifeguarding, his shaggy appearance instantly earned him the nickname, “Dirty Hippy”. Several years and one or two haircuts later, he’s now known simply as “Hippy”. James is a modern mountain man; his love of bluegrass, the Appalachians, and the simple life make him a welcome part of the team, to say nothing of his skills as a teacher and aquatics expert. When he isn’t living off the land or saving lives, James restores his air-cooled Volkswagen Thing and plays a mean banjo.

Major: BS Nursing, 2011

Credentials: Emergency Response Instructor Trainer, Lifeguard Training and CPR Instructor, and Active member of the American Red Cross Volunteer Life Saving Corps since 2004. In 2009 he was made Lieutenant of the Corps.
